Interview with Jürg Rageth
“No book in the carpet world has tested the patience of collectors interested in Turkmen carpets more severely than Jürg Rageth’s Turkmen Carpets – A New Perspective, which has taken 16 years from the original idea to the printed product. The two-volume book has now been published, in German and English. Rageth, in co-operation with Hans Christian Sienknecht, puts the Turkmen carpet under the spotlight of interdisciplinary analysis with scientific contributions from George Bonani, Jan Wouters and Ina Vanden Berghe. The scientific fundamentals are 130 radiocarbon datings and 230 dye and 60 mordant analyses. There is no question that the bar for this book is set extremely high. Reason enough for Carpet Collector to take a trip to Basel to talk there with the author of this long-awaited work.”

„Kein Buch in der Teppichwelt dürfte interessierte Sammler turkmenischer Teppiche stärker auf die Geduldsprobe gestellt haben als Jürg Rageths „Turkmenische Teppiche – Ein neuer Ansatz“. Von der Idee bis zum fertigen Druck dauerte es 16 Jahre. Das Buch erschien nun in englischer und deutscher Sprache in je zwei Bänden. In Zusammenarbeit mit Hans Christian Sienknecht und mit wissenschaftlichen Beträgen von Georges Bonani, Jan Wouters and Ina Vanden Berghe durchleuchtet Rageth den turkmenischen Teppich interdisziplinär. Die wissenschaftliche Grundlage bilden 130 Radiokarbondatierungen, 230 Farb- und 60 Beizenanalysen. Keine Frage, dass die Messlatte für dieses Werk enorm hoch liegt. “Jürg Rageth has worked for almost two decades on this seminal publication in a specialist field of oriental weavings—Turkmen carpets. Having previously worked with Anatolian kilims, his analysis of scientific data from radiocarbon dating of wool samples and thin layer chromatography testing for dyestuffs, considered in the light of extensive studies on the history of Turkmen rug designs, allows the ‘new perspective’ of the title.”

“[…] So kann Rageths genau 900seitiges Corpuswerk ohne Zweifel als eine der wichtigsten Publikationen zum Spezialgebiet der Turkmenenteppiche bezeichnet werden, in die der Autor sein überbordendes Wissen eingebracht hat und zu dem die führenden Naturwissenschaftler und Sammler ihren Beitrag geliefert haben. Als Kunsthistoriker, der zumal in der mittelalterlichen Kultur zu Hause ist, sind mir derart lange Kontinuitätsreihen durchaus bekannt. Deshalb kann das Werk auch dem Laien auf dem Gebiet des orientalischen Textils als Musterbuch angetragen werden. Dem Kenner, auch den Sammlern von Teppichen anderer Provenienzen, wird dieses Werk Referenzen und neue Ideen vielfältiger Art liefern. It combines the author’s knowledge with contributions by leading scientists and collectors. As an art historian at home in medieval culture, I am familiar with long lines of continuity. Rageth’s work can be commended as a manual for amateurs in the field of eastern textiles. For experts and collectors of rugs of other types, it offers references and a range of new ideas. In particular, his refreshingly unclouded interdisciplinary perspective, using all available methods from linguistics to isotope analysis, has allowed him to create a treasure trove that will inspire many new approaches to research.”
